Nonesuch Academics
Seminar Style Classes
The average class size at Nonesuch is between three and eight students. These small, seminar style classes provide a unique opportunity for in-depth learning through exploration, research, critical thinking and discussion. Teachers are able to get to know the each student as an individual, addressing their specific strengths and needs for learning. Since we are able to cater so uniquely to each student, there maybe a freshman in trigonometry with a senior or a sophomore and junior side by side in an A.P. English class. In this environment, the emotional and social education received by the peer group is integral to the learning that takes place. Teachers are always available for conferences and provide the opportunity for students to delve deeper into the subject or ask for help.
Workshops
Nonesuch School holds regular classes Monday - Wednesday, leaving Thursdays free for creative educational activities and Fridays for guided independent study. Throughout the course of the school year teachers facilitate workshops in their areas of interest and expertise. Nonesuch also regularly invites members of the community with special skills and knowledge to expand the variety of workshop opportunities. All of these workshops are available to any student who is interested in exploring any of the activities offered. Although students are required to attend approximately six four-week sessions every year, we like to think of the workshops as an opportunity for student's to truly pursue what they are interested in. Therefore we try to provide diverse options every session, with subjects including:
- Cinema and Literature
- Art History
- Book Making
- Yarn spinning, dyeing and knitting
- San Francisco Museum Appreciation
- Print Making
- Poetry
- College Entrance Essay Development
Senior Project
As a requirement for graduation every senior must complete an independent project, consisting of at least 40 documented hours of work. Students will choose a member of the faculty to guide and assist them with project and time management. Our faculty represents a wide range of expertise and the students are encouraged to take advantage of the wealth of knowledge available from all of our teachers.
College Counseling
Having been in the field of education for more than 40 years, Lynne Koplof, Director, has accumulated a wealth of knowledge on available educational opportunities. Students have the opportunity to discuss their educational goals with faculty as well as the Director, to find the right university or program to fit that individual. Support during the transition into college is also continued after graduation. Several past graduates have called one of the teachers or Lynne to get, "help with my first paper", and they are always happy to help.
